misbelieves it the minor or less important
writers, who follow him in every particular, are
sure to commit the very same mistake; for, as
a rule, they allow their mind, for the time being,
to occupy a convenient seat on the shores
of the Lethe. Blunders, originally committed

Buddha believed, like many other great
religious philosophers, that man was the true
‘image of God,’ but concealed in the midst of
so many worldly ‘hulls and wrappages.’ He

supernatural things, or miracles. In fact the
‘emancipated’ man and God were one ; and
such a being thus perfected could do what he
liked. Buddha’s God was not a collection of
so many asbtract qualities in the superlative
degree ; but a living soul endowed with all
of them'. Consequently, a man who actually
possessed those requisite qualities was a god
in man’s attire.
