set a statue of their deliverer, whom they look-
ed upon as an incarnation of God, in the midst

to appear at the time of worship. There is no
people, in the world, who are so reluctant to
break with old customs, as the Hindus ; and
although no temples were raised, to revere the
idol of Buddha in his lifetime, many were built,
with statues in them, of Buddha and his mother,

Buddha, though conscious of his great
personality and power, never enjoined upon
his disciples the necessity of erecting temples
in his memory or honor, or, in any way,
worshipping him like the idols of Rama and
Krishna of old. On the other hand, in spite
of all his godlike greatness, he was very
