LXVI. Potthast I, 665: ”sehr selten" and II, 980.
An absolutly perfect and finely preserved copy of the oldest Chro-
nicle of Hungary which ranks among the rarest illustrated books of the
15th century.
This is the first edition, published June 3, 1488. The Brilon edition
of March 20, 1488 was published after ours, for the date is due to mistake.
Potthast states regarding the Brunn edition: “Ebert no. 4141 halt diese Ausg. mit
Unredit fur die erste; sie ist jedenfalls in Bezug aufs Datum gefalsdit. Eine Ver-
gleidiung beider stellt die Prioritat der eistern fest”. It is the first illustrat-
ed book published by Ratdolt at Augsburg and one of his most
beautiful productions.
From the cuts we may mention the representation of the rescue by Ladis-
laus of the daughter of the Grofiwardein Bishop from the Tures, the arms of
Mathias Corvinus within a circle and the invasion of the Tartars. Other cuts
depict kings, scenes of battles etc. The first two cuts mentioned above were
painted in colours, gold and silver. The circle with the arms was cut out
and mounted at an early date.
Our copy is in the first state and conforms to the first Brit. Mus. copy.
The book itself was printed at expenses of Theobald Feger, book-
seller at Buda.
Clean and well preserved copy with some old MS. notes and a few small
stains. No complete copy readied the market during the last years. Per-
fect copies are extremely rare.
Only three copies in U. S. A. (acc. to Census).
See Reproduction, opposite.
