bis. A treatise descriptive of the globes constructed by Emery Molyneux, and publ. in 1592).
The author, Robert Hues, English geographer, sailed round the world with Thomas
Cavendish and was a friend of Sir Walter Raleigh (bom 1553, died 1632). Insign, browned,

title and some diagrams. 4 11., 202 pp., 6 11., 1 bl. 1. Vellum. 120.—
Original edition of one of the rarest items in the Kepler-Brahe literature. Scipio Chia-
ramonte, an Italian scientist, wrote a book, entitled "Antitycho", in which he tried to prove
from Tycho’s own works that comets are sublunary. After Brahe’s death Kepler undertook
to defend Brahe’s theories. In this book also Kepler speaks of his intention of publishing
Brahe’s unpublished observations, the Tabulae Rudolphinae, issued in 1627. A few leaves
somewhat browned but a good copy.

vellum. 60.—
Interesting treatise on theoretical and practical geography and astronomy. The second
part deals with the art of navigation, and, among the instruments in use there we find one
of the earliest descriptions of the Compass. The chapter which begins on p.
26 and which is illustrated with a cut of a needle of compass contains the following headings:
"De compasso eiusque usu, et primum de declinatione acus, sive indicis magnetici. De usu
compassi, et quid Nauclero in directione navis observandum."
Fine copy with old bookplate. Old name on the title.

sitiones facta, etc. Acc. Cl. Ptolemaei vita per eundem descripta. Basel, Oporinus, 1559.
Sm.-8 vo. Hf.-vellum. 24.—
A rare treatise, defending astrology. Cont. further: Disputatio in Melanthonis lib. de anima,

Denis 112. "An interest, commentary on the ’Meteora’ of Aristotle by Pierre d’Ailly
(Bishop of Cambrai, 1350—1420), the great French mediaeval philosopher and theologian,
who was the teacher of Gerson, and whose cosmographical theorems are quoted in the
Toscanelli-letter to Columbus. It contains his theory of falling-stars, comets, rain, dew,
snow, hail, wind and earthquakes, and also deals with the nature of the minerals and metals
in the bowels of earth." Good copy, slightly stained on the margins.
379 Piccolomini, Aless. La sfera del mondo. Di nuovo da lui ripolita, accresc. et fino a sei libri
ampliata et quasi per ogni parte rinnovata. Venetia, G. Varisco e comp., 1566. 4 to. W. ma-
ny diagrams and 47 full-page woodcuts repr. constellations; prin-
ter’s mark on title. Old limp vellum. 36.—
Riccardi II, col. 270 does'nt quote this edition of this interesting astronomical work. The first
part is an extensive treatise on mathematical astronomy, the second part, with separate pagination
contains the first published star-maps. Four different magnitudes are distinguished, and the stars
are named with Latin letters. The woodcut represent constellations, each page cont. one figure. These
star-maps are followed by calendar tables of the single constellations. Waterstains at the beg. and end.
