Pieter Pauw, a pupil of Fabricius ab Aquapendente and Dodonaeus, foun-
ded the Theatrum anatomicum at Leyden.
Paracelsus, Aureolus, Phil. Theophr. Bombast., of Hohenheim, 1493—
1541. Bust at the age of 47, the hand on his "Azoth", behind him a wall with
2 windows. With many German verses from his prophecies, laudatory poems
and the epitaph at Salzburg. Engraving by Bal th. Jenichen. ca. 1580.

Andresen, Dt. Peintre-graveur IL 136. 43. A very scarce portrait of Paracelsus, the real
reformer of mediaeval medicine and the most original thinker of the 16 th cent. He is a pio-
neer in chemical pharmacology and therapeutics. In 1527 he became physician to the town
of Basel. But soon, he met with opposition from the ordinary physicians, druggists and the
authorities, left Basel and began the wandering life, which he hencefort spent. After travels
in Europe and even in Asia, he died in 1541 in Salzburg. The "Azoth" which is reproduced in
the form of a sword-hilt on most of the portraits of Paracelsus, is the chief alchemic sub-
stance for preparing the philosopher’s stone. It is also the medical symbol and highest remedy
of Paracelsus.
