V e r y rare. This is the more complete edition containing 7 plates while another
issue of the same year includes only five plates. These plates give interesting represen-
tations of the Indian natives, partly in European dress.
The book is of the greatest importance in connection writh the French attempts at
colonization in South America. The island of Maragnan is on the coast of Brazil at
the mouth of the Amazon. The French called it la France Equinoctiale, a name which
was afterwards transferred to their colony in Guiana. Maragnan was not held for
very long by the French, and soon feil into the hands of the Portuguese.
