Red morocco. Back with bands omamented with garlands and fleurons. Sides magnificently decorated
with compartments of straight and curved gilt fillets interlaced and interspersed with fleurons. At
centre of Upper cover contained in a hexagon the inscription dated 1550. Richly gauffered gilt cdges.
A very fine and well preserved specimen of an ,,Ebeleben" binding in the Grolier style.
Ebeleben, son of a Saxon nobleman with considerable estates and with a position at the court of the
Saxon Dukes, went to the universities of Paris and Bologna. He had some of his books bound in these
cities in Grolier style and later in Germany had others copied from those executed during these
student days.
This type of binding executed in Germany is of the greatest rarity and few copies, perhaps five or
six only, are known to exist.

Brown morocco. Back with bands ornamented with fleurons. Sides richly decorated with a quadruple
frame of angels and symbolical figures, garlands and flowers, biblicals personnages etc. in the central
rect angle, gilt figure of Martin Luther with de vice. Above and below, gilt inscription. A simit.
decoration on lower cover excepting the central rectangle which contains the portraits of Melanch-
thon with device. Above and below large compartments of gilt arabesques. Small inside garland.
Gauffered gilt edges. — Very fine binding in German style executed for N. Ebeleben.

das ganze Innenfeld bedeckt m. prachtvoll, stilis, Blumenranken (Nelken, Narzissen, Mohn). Auf
Vorderdeckel als Mittclstück in längl. Oval das Emblem d. Klosters, d. Gnadenbild d. Madonna m.
Kind, umgeben von einem Spruchband: ,,FUNDATRIX MONASTERY ETTALENSIS", auf Rücken-
deckel entsprechend d. Wappen d. Abtes Placidus Seitz (1709—36), Anker m. Taube, v. 2 Engeln ge-
halten, m. Stab u. Inful (vergl. Zimmermann, Bayer, Klosterheraldik, S. 72, wo das vereinfachte
Wappen abgeb. ist) u. Spruchband: „PLACIDUS ABBAS ETTALENSIS".
Der besondere Wert d. Einbandes liegt in d, tadellos. Erhaltung, einer kaum glaublichen Frische d.
Prägung u. Vergoldung.
Light calf. Back richly decorated in gilt. Each cover sumptuously decorated in gilt consisting of
frames and large sprays of leaves and flowers. In the middle of the front cover, in an medaillon, the
emblem of the Monastery of Ettal: the Virgin Maria holding the Infant Jesus; on the back cover the
arms of the abba-s Placidus (1709—36). Gilt edges. — Of the greatest freshness.

106 Erfurter Einband. — Rotbrauner blindgeprägter Halblederband auf Holz-
deckel Gr. Folio —: mit großen, ziselierten Eckbeschlägen, Mittelstücken und
schuppenförmig gravierten Schließenhaltern (Schließenbänder fehlen). Durch
vier Linien mit dem vierfachen Streicheisen werden 3 Rahmen gebildet, deren
erster leer ist. Der zweite enthält aneinandergereihte Lilienstempel, der 3.
sechs große (Erfurter) Rosetten, dazwischen rhombische Blütenstempel. Das
Mittelfeld ist ausgefüllt mit einem Tierstempel (Hund?). Der Rückdeckel
ebenso, nur ist das Mittelfeld mit aus Streiciieisenlinien gebildeten Rhomben
ausgefüllt. Die Prägung ist ungewöhnlich scharf. (Literatur: H. Endres. Jahrb.

Ebeleben, son of a Saxon nobleman with considerable estates and with a position at the court of the

106 Erfurter Einband. — Rotbrauner blindgeprägter Halblederband auf Holz-
deckel Gr. Folio —: mit großen, ziselierten Eckbeschlägen, Mittelstücken und
schuppenförmig gravierten Schließenhaltern (Schließenbänder fehlen). Durch
vier Linien mit dem vierfachen Streicheisen werden 3 Rahmen gebildet, deren
erster leer ist. Der zweite enthält aneinandergereihte Lilienstempel, der 3.
sechs große (Erfurter) Rosetten, dazwischen rhombische Blütenstempel. Das
Mittelfeld ist ausgefüllt mit einem Tierstempel (Hund?). Der Rückdeckel
ebenso, nur ist das Mittelfeld mit aus Streiciieisenlinien gebildeten Rhomben
ausgefüllt. Die Prägung ist ungewöhnlich scharf. (Literatur: H. Endres. Jahrb.
