Die sehr kostbare flämische Original-Ausgabe dieses berühmten
Pracht-Werkes, das gleichzeitig auch französisch und lateinisch erschienen ist, aus der Feder
des Dürer-Freundes u. Stadtschreibers Cornelius Schryver (Scriver) oder Graphaeus, eines
eifrigen Verehrers von Erasmus und Luther, der in den Zeiten der Gegenreformation in den Nieder-
landen eine große Rolle gespielt hat.

with grotesque figures, fruit, etc . . . the true title-page follows on A 2, in 18 lines of large
and small type, includ. the note of approbation, &c., with the name ofP.de Lens. On verso:

C o e c k ’ s father-in-law, H. G o 11 z. On A 3 is the dedicat. toPrince Charles (Don
Carlos), Charles V’s »soens sone« [This short-lived prince, »whose melancholy history and unti-
mely death have been the subject of poetry and romance« was born 1545 and died 1568; said to
have been poisoned by his father Philip II.) P h i 1 i p ’ s entry into Brussels is mentioned.
This preface, cont. divers interesting particulars, is dated Antw. 1550 on A 4 vo. The text begins
B 1 & ends O 3 vo with colophon. O 4 is a leaf with four lines of type within a border, vo blank
(wanting in this copy). The texte commences with the Statement that on 10. Sept. 1549
CharlesV with his two sisters Eleonora and Maria, queens respectivly of France
and H u n g a r y and with his son Philip »van Mechelen reysende, is gecomen totter
stadt von Lyere . . .« The entry was actually made by the Keyserspoorte which was first
opened in 1545: see D 1 v. A carefully detailed account is given of all the arches, festivities etc.,
ending on O 3 with »Summa van allen den Constenaren ende wercluyden . . . .« divided between
the City, »Duytschen Spaniards, English, Florentines and »Geneuoysen«, the total number of
persons employed beeing 1726 including 233 painters. The total cost was 26.800 »Carolus gülden«.
In the dedicat. an example is given of the Genoese arch (illustrat. on F 2) which cost 234 »Carolus
and employed 280 workmen . . .
Besides the 2 full-page borders already mentioned there are 29 large woodcuts by Pieter
Coecke, mostly full-page, some extending across two pages, and in one case across three pages,
viz. that of the Palace and its bridge or gallery on L 1 vo & L 2 . . . PieterCoecke, was
born at Aelst in 1502. After visiting Rome he returned to the Netherlands, and married, pre-
sumably the daughter of H. Goltz. A widower sometime before 1533 he was at Constantinopel
in that year. Married Maria (Maeyeken) Verhulst or Bessemers c. 1548 and had a
daughter who became the wife of Pieter Breughel. Coeck also translated Serlio’s
Architecture.»
Unser Exemplar ist besonders wertvoll dadurch, daß ihm 3 Bll. vorgebunden
sind, die allen bekannten Exemplaren fehlen, mit großen Wappendarstellungen,
darunter das von Antwerpen, von Spanien und ein Medaillonportrait von Philipp, sämtliche
schön mit der Hand koloriert. Auch das bei Murray fehlende Blatt O4 ist hier vorhanden.
Schönes Exemplar, auf der 1. Seite die handschriftliche Notiz: „Les figures dans cet exemplaire
sont coloriees d’aprfes les dessins originaux.“
