Urszula Perkowska
positions or for the creation of new chairs. In the academic year 1865/66 he acted as
Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. In this capacity, he dealt with the university library,
the system of scholarships, and the reopening of the Department of Bibliography, which
had been closed. Several years later, in the academic year 1870/71, he was entrusted
with the highest office at the university - that of the rector. During his term, he dealt
with the matters of the university law, benefices, the printing press and the founda-
tions. He came up with a number of interesting proposals; he insisted on the need to
erect a building for the Faculty of Law, and he suggested that the name of the Univer-
sity should be changed to "Uniwersytet Kazimierzowsko-Jagielloński", to honour the
king who was the founder of the school. In the difficult weeks of May 1871, during
student riots caused by the so-called "Dóllinger Case", he showed great skill in deal-
ing with the situation, soothing the mood of the students by appealing to reason and
eventually ąuietening the matter in a diplomatic way.
Despite the fact that the academic level of the Jagiellonian University in the 1820s
was not very high, Józef Kremer received a sound education in the humanities. Later,
he worked at the University for over 25 years, using his knowledge and his talent for
teaching with great conscientiousness to best serve the University. In the history of the
University, he holds a place of one of the most outstanding teachers and organizers of
academic life.
