Katarzyna Brzezina-Scheuerer, Agata Dworzak, Marcin Fabiański, Piotr Krasny,
Michał Kurzeja and Dagny Nestorów, was published by the Societas Vistulana
publishing house. This is the expression of the highest recognition on the part of
the Polish and international art historians - counting 74 articles related to the main
research fields that the Professor had pursued, included in the publication. The lat-
ter featured texts by the students of the Professor, by His friends and co-workers,
who in this way attempted to express their gratitude to Him for His many years of
work, help and inspiration in all their endeavours.
The official part of the jubilee ended with the speech by Professor Jan Ostrowski
himself who recalled, among others, how an art historian should proceed in his
work, thus explaining His scientific credo, which He has imparted to successive
generations of students for great many years, when lecturing “The Introduction
to Art History”. He emphasized the need to prepare for the study of the work, to
collect a feasibly complete set of available information thereon, to assemble all
archival sources and literaturę, and to keep a proper sequence of actions: starting
from documentation, to description, to analysis and interpretation. Professor also
mentioned the First years of His own studies, which He had began in 1965 at the
Institute of Art History, at that time located at St. Annes Street in the Collegium
Maius. He remembered His own masters: professors Adam Bochnak, Tadeusz
Dobrowolski, Jerzy Szabłowski and Józef Lepiarczyk, stating that “the studies at
that time looked exactly like today. We also had lectures, practical classes, pro-
seminars, seminars, and field studies.” In Professor Ostrowskis considerations,
the importance of tradition resounded strongly - not only the tradition relating to
the university but also to the pursuit of learning as such. We might even say that
the Professor, reminding us - with His characteristic consistency and integrity -
about the principles of methodology, even during His own birthday celebration,
showed His guests in the audience an attitude worthy of the name of our true Master
and Scholar. •
