gathered at the court of Louis xiv, however, ultimately depended on the indi-
vidual sensitivity and background of each traveller - among whom there was an
architect, and a teenage Jesuit pupil who knew the works of Bernini. The young
nobles, usually educated in Jesuit colleges and familiar with the sphere of symbols,
interpreted the iconographic program and propaganda content of the artworks
correctly, linking the mythological costume with the victories of the glorified
Louis xiv, whose spectacular triumphs celebrated by “Rex in specie Appollinis”62
were admired by subsequent travellers arriving at his court. In the optics of Ba-
roque travellers, Versailles was the perfect stage and setting for the Sun King,
and the accounts of the journeys faultlessly reflect the significance of the pałace
within the social and cultural space of the time. •
