in Krakow organized an exhibition in 1997 that drew attention to the features of
the collection of this outstanding numismatist. Godlewska de Aranda emphasized
at this time that it was necessary that Hutten-Czapski’s will be honored, that is,
that the Czapski Museum make his collection - which had been off-limits to the
museum’s visitors as of 1939 - open to the public once again. At her inspiration -
in order to support various initiatives aimed at fulfilling this goal - the Association
of Benefactors of the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum was created; Godlewska
de Aranda also became a member of the association. Her energetic efforts and
persuasive skills had an enormous influence on the creation of a project to renovate
the museum’s building, which was ultimately restored and equipped with a lavish
and modem numismatic exposition that opened in 2013. It was expanded shortly
afterwards with the inauguration in 2016 of the Józef Czapski Pavilion. Besides
a biographical exhibition, the pavilion also includes works by this outstanding
painter and writer, Emeryk’s grandson.
The services rendered to Poland’s culture by Izabella Godlewska de Aranda
fit neatly with the best Polish traditions that her ancestors upheld, and she deserves
our grateful commemoration.
