ON THE EVE OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
Abstract
This article discusses the development of fortifications in the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire during the 19th century.
including the characteristics and typical examples of structures involved in the First World War. It handles the topie of the foremost
construction of the late 19th century - the artillery fort called the “Biehler’s fort"’, and briefly, its successors - the armoured fort. the
infantry fort, the infantry resistance point - with regards to technical progress and the strategies of war planning.
Artistic issues raised relate to the fortified landscape, society's perceptions of defensive structures during the period of their
operation. and formal Solutions for the compositions of facades, which were permitted to a limited degree. The paper describes the
components of designing fortifications in Germany, based on centrally generated detailed guidelines, normative pattems and multi-stage
control, and in this context, the issue of authorship.
Finally, the article briefly outlines the course of military events that took place on the territory of East Prussia and the role for-
tifications played.
