WORKS CONDUCTED IN THE ATEEIER
OF CONSERYATION OF PAINTING,
THE PRINCES CZARTORYSKI MUSEUM,
IN THE YEARS 1998-2000
Summary
The Princes Czartoryski Museum has several outstanding paintings on dis-
play, some of which are part of the Princes Czartoryski Collection and the Na-
tional Museum of Cracow, and which increased in stature after restoration. The
most interesting and valuable paintings were discovered in the process of con-
servation, some of which were in storage for many years.
A few examples include the discovery of signatures of artists on two paint-
ings by Hendrick Herregouts (1633-1704) and Comelis de Bie (1621-1654). An-
other significant success was the restoration of the painting Annunciation from
the workshop of Dieric Bouts (ca. 1490), in which the colours were highlighted
after restoration. A few of the Dutch oak panel paintings are described in detail
in the article.
A typical examination by the conservator - a thorough search of the painting
itself including the techniąue and materials - has been enhanced by further in-
spection by scientists through Chemical and physical analyses.
