FRANCESCO de'MEDICI BY JUSTUS SUSTEMANS

A portrait. of a young man, attributed to Justus Sustermans, has recently
entered the gallery of foreign painting in the Czartoryski Collection,
which now is a department of the National Museum in Cracow. This portrait
ramę from the Tarnowski Collection at Dzików and had been bought in Romę as
painted by van Dyck. Its attribution to Sustermans has been accepted by
Hofstede de Groot.

This beautiful painting which reminds of Velasquez, owing to the wonderfui
gualities of its brushwork, represents Francesco de‘ Medici (1614—1634),
a younger brother of Ferdinand II, who died at Regensburg as an officer of the
imperial army. We know his face from the print by Stefano della Bella
and from another portrait by Sustermans, now at Poggio a Cajano, where
Soulier discovered ,,une desinvolture a la van Dyck".

The Cracow portrait shows the same man, but in court attire; it is con-
templative and lyrical. Compared to many portraits painted by Sustermans,
the Cracow picture excells them as one of his best artistic achievements.
