" HOO, THE WHITE OWL." ILLUS-
TRATION TO " THE ENID BLYTON
BOOK OF FAIRIES." PEN DRAWING
BY HORACE J. KNOWLES

(George Newnes, Ltd.)

Mr. Dacres Adams and Mr. Sanderson
Wells, and a series of delightful humorous
drawings by Mr. Heath Robinson. In the
gallery of Messrs. Bromhead, Cutts and
Co., Mr. David Wilson, the well-known
caricaturist, exhibited flower paintings and
landscapes of very sound quality; at the
Greatorex Galleries there were some
shrewdly observed and capably realised
studies of game birds and wild fowl by
Mr. P. Rickman ; and at Messrs. Connell's
Gallery some water-colours and aquatints
of Oxford by Mr. A. F. Affleck which had
merit above the average. a 0 0
A reproduction is given of a painting by
Mr. Gilbert Holiday which was included
in an exhibition of sporting pictures at the
Sporting Gallery, which has recently been
opened in King Street, Covent Garden.
The aim of this gallery is to keep always
on view a collection of works which will
appeal to sportsmen and which have been
produced by artists who have a thorough
understanding of the subject-matter with
which they deal. In this first exhibition

there were contributions from Mr. Den-
holm Armour, Mr. Lionel Edwards, Mr.
Talbot Kelly, Mr. Warwick Reynolds,
Miss Winifred Austen, Mr. H. M. Bate-
man, and other painters and draughtsmen
of repute. a 0 0 a a
The examples here given of typography
are important as illustrating a form of
design which calls for the exercise of a
very delicate sense of proportion and a
certain daintiness of taste. These ex-
amples are productions of the classes in
artistic typography conducted by a group
of instructors at the Camberwell School of
Art. In the " New Year Concert " the
type used is the Kennerley Old Style, de-
signed in America by Mr. Goudy, the
initial letter is designed by Mr. Percy
Smith, and the tail-piece by a student in
the school. The other illustration is set
up in Antique Old Style type, made by
Messrs. Stephenson, Blake, and Co., of
