species, individual form and movement,
the psyche of the animal remain the
principal aim. With a few lines of ripples
she can conjure up the vast water from
which the leopards are quenching their
thirst; with some bent blades the desert-
ground, over which the hunted antelopes
are chasing. She becomes an orna-
mentalist when some feathers of fighting
cocks, some bristles of a quadruped are
to be reproduced. 0000

Her early animal studies are mostly
brushed down with one colour, and focus
one particular part or movement. Then
she drew whole animals in several colours,
and inserted them into the landscape.
She employed the brush and black chalk,
rarely graphite. Her love of colour could
not be satisfied with merely black and
white work; ' she uses now mostly four
plates, and has become a great friend of
the lino-cut. Illustrative work has always
been practised. Just now she is following
her pedagogue's bent by re-illustrating all
the Styrian school-books. 000

Norbertine Bresslern-Roth was born
for her profession. After studies with the
excellent teacher Professor Schrotter in
Graz she trained herself under Professor
Hayek in Dachau and, last but not least,
under Professor Schmutzer in the Vienna
Academy. He tried to dissuade her from
animal subjects, but although she proved

a good hand for the nude, the landscape
and fairy-tale composition, the animal
remained her preferred model. She
worked persistently in animal-parks, and
whatever bird, fish or newt could be kept
in the room became a house-mate. At
twenty-five she was an independent artist
and married Georg, Ritter von Bresslern,
who also assists her in technical difficul-
ties. She has exhibited and sold much
and won prizes, diplomas and in 1923 the
State Gold Medal in Graz. In the
Steirische Landesbildergallery and in
the Albertina her works can be studied.
The artist is now only thirty-four years
old, and she is so intensely bent on progress
that success cannot seduce her into any
relaxation of endeavour. 000
