" WINTER TWILIGHT, FRANCE "
BY W. S. HORTON

flakes. It is a carnival night, and the
whole, with its strange effects given by
the light of fireworks, is portrayed in a
very individual manner, with an appreci-
ation of truth and fantasy, reality and
unreality. a a 0 a a

In another series Mr. Horton has
depicted the same Alpine valley under
different conditions—at sunrise in winter,
in the afternoon light, and covered with
the mantle of snow, a a a a

Dare I confess, however, that it is in
his most abstract conceptions, when he
confines himself almost entirely to painting
the movements and splendours of the
heavens, that he seems to me most original,
most dexterous and effective i Here he is
really exceptional. But this does not
mean that he is not always an eminently
.sound painter who does honour to the
school to which he belongs, and in which

he had his training-—the modern French
School—to which his adhesion, I venture
to say, does him honour. a a a

VENICE, PAST AND PRESENT. *

A"STUDIO"special number of striking
interest, bearing the above title, will
appear towards the end of this month.
Venice, with her great history and pic-
turesque beauty, has attracted many of
our greatest artists, and a liberal selection
from their pictorial records is here given,
eight of the plates being in colours. Be-
sides earlier painters, such modern masters
as Brangwyn, Sargent, Monet and Zorn
are included. 0 a a a

The text, by Mr. Selwyn Brinton, M.A.,
recounts the rise and progress of Venice
in vivid fashion. a a a a
