unworthy of her attention, and she has
justified her choice by the quality of her
rendering. Something of the same kind
can be said of Miss M. Layng's Seat in
the Park. She has found in a common-
place group in a commonplace surround-
ing material for a well-observed study of
character, and she has presented certain
types of humanity with much shrewdness

Mr. P. H. Jowett's water-colours must
be noted as examples of frank statement
in which the intention has been to
record directly and simply what the
artist saw and felt, and to avoid the arti-
fices of treatment by which the clearness
of the impression made by the subjects
might be obscured. A show of his work
will shortly open at the St. George's Gallery.
BRADFORD—The Art Gallery Com-
mittee of the Bradford Corporation
have made a special effort to get together
an important loan collection of paintings
to illustrate British art from the time of
Hogarth to the present day. This special
effort is intended to celebrate the coming-
of-age of the Cartwright Memorial Hall,
which was erected and opened as an art
gallery in 1904, and which has just reached
its majority. The building ranks amongst
the finest of provincial art galleries. 0
This important collection, open this
month, takes the place of the usual spring
exhibition of modern art, and will be con-
tinued till the end of April. 0 a
Since the opening of the building in
1904 it is estimated that no fewer than
7,000,000 persons have visited the art
exhibitions held there. 000
