RECENT WORK BY MR, GILBERT
BAYES. BY T. P. BENNETT,
F.R.I.BA. a a a a a

THE work of Mr. Bayes has attracted
attention for many years, but few
of his subjects have shown more facility
in expression or displayed more unmis-
takable signs of originality than the
recent work that he has executed. In
this article is given an illustration of one
of his heroic equestrian bronzes as well as
some of his smaller work in pottery and
wood. Of the latter perhaps the most
fascinating is the child-fountain, which
is illustrated herewith. This figure has
been modelled with a simplicity and
charm which few sculptors of to-day
could equal, while the coloured glazes
in which it is executed give it striking
originality and distinction. The flesh
colours are duller than those used for the

drapery and other portions of the group,
and thereby retain a texture which is in
itself a great attraction. A copy of this
figure is to be used outside the British
Pavilion at the Paris Exhibition for 1925,
and it will be incorporated in a scheme
containing a fountain basin with a small
squirrel, also in glazed pottery, which
will be placed at the point where the water
falls into the pool. Messrs. Doulton and
Co. have been responsible for the actual
pottery, and have carried out a very large
number of experiments under Mr. Bayes's
direction in their efforts to obtain the
highest efficiency and depth in colouring
and surface. The sculptor's special interest
in these pottery figures is due to the fact
that they are capable of being used in the
open air, and if necessary, on a large scale.

The pottery figures, however, are not
the only recent essays which Mr. Bayes
has made in coloured sculpture. He has
