the adoration of the country
men." pen drawing by m. kono

TOKYO.—The portrait in oils by Ryusei
Kishida, and the pen-drawing by
M. Kono on this page illustrate a new
tendency in modern Japanese art. a
Mr. Kishida is about 35 years of age
and Mr. Kono 27. The former has been
variously regarded as a rebel or a genius,
but without question he is the most out-
standing figure amongst the younger
painters who work strongly under the
influence of Western art. However much
we may regret the passing of the art of
old Japan here is more than superficial
imitation, and the fact that many of the
younger painters under the leadership
of Mr. Kishida have, during the last ten
years, after a deep immersion in European
thought, turned their attention again to
their own great Eastern art with fresh
vision, is a matter for profound congratu-
lation. M. Kono, the son of a local
printer in one of the hill towns, made this
and other remarkable drawings at the age
of 20, under the influence of occasional
prints of the work of Durer, Michael portrait by

Angelo, Mantegna and Rembrandt. 0 ryusei kishida
