Interior Arrangement and Decoration

Messrs. Wylie & Loch-
head's entrance-hall (p. i)
has, beneath a narrow
frieze, high panelling in
wood painted white. On
the other hand, the hall
(p. i) at Stoneleigh, Glas-
gow, a house designed by
Mr. H. E. Clifford, archi-
tect, is fitted with Austrian
oak, the mantelpiece being
of stone. The gates at the
end of the hall, on either
side of the foot of the stair-
case, are an unusual and
interesting feature. The
woodwork of the drawing-
room (p. 25) is satin-wood
with mother-of-pearl inlay.

is panelled with green silk
tapestry, while the upper

the oak rooms already mentioned is a dining-room part is lined with straw-coloured silk. The dining-
(p. 17) designed by Messrs. Liberty, in which the room (p. 14) is fitted and furnished entirely in natural
white-painted panelling, together with the mahogany Spanish mahogany, the wall-spaces being lined with
furniture, go to make up a thoroughly consistent and silk tapestry. The library (p. 22) is furnished and
considered decoration, based upon, but not by any panelled in Austrian oak, with a deep frieze of silk
means slavishly copied from, the style of the brothers tapestry. The moulded plaster ceilings in these
Adam. The twin columns, introduced at intervals three rooms should not be passed by without notice,
in the wall panelling, find their counterpart in the The embroidered panel over the drawing-room
sideboard back, and are
also again repeated in the
legs of the sideboard and
of the table. White, pale
greens and mauve, and, in
the furniture, a rich tone
inclining to deep violet
rather than to the logwood
red which furniture-makers
seem generally to prefer to
stain their mahogany, com-
bine to produce a most
harmonious and effective
colour scheme. White
painted panelling beneath
a richly coloured frieze
lines the walls of a drawing-
room (p. 29) by Messrs.
Waring & Gillow; and,
again, white woodwork with
grey walls forms the motij
of a morning-room (p. 34)
