land und sollte bei Planung der landwirtschaft-
lichen Entwicklung in Betracht gezogen werden.

2. I conducted dissertation research on the tradi-
tional irrigation system in al-Ahjur during
1978 and 1979 under a Fulbright-Hayes
Grant-in-Aid. A detailed analysis is pre-
sented in Varisco 1982. A study of the local
irrigation system will appear by the same
author in Human Ecology.
3. The leaves of this plant are chewed for a
narcotic effect. Qat is the most rewarding
cash crop in the valley.
4. This term or a variant is used for a similar tool
in Egypt and Palestine (JDalman, vol. II,
p. 120), Syria {du Mesnil du Buisson, p. 109),
and classical Arabic.
