Peintre, graveur sur cuivre et sur bois, Virgile Solis
naquit en 1514 à Nuremberg et y mourut en 1570.
Son Œuvre, qui se monte à peu près à 900 pièces,
se distingue par la grande netteté du travail et par
l'aspect décoratif des compositions; les pièces les
plus finies rappellent la manière de Hans Sebald
Beham. Il tient un rang honorable parmi les Petits
Maîtres (voy. p. 71). Outre ses propres composi-
tions qu'il a gravées, il a aussi reproduit Raphaël,
Lucas de Leyde, Aldegrave, etc. — Nous donnons ici
de lui quelques Frises qui sont des sujets de chasse,
pièces rares et pou connues, tirées de la collection de

Virgilius Solis, a painter and a wood and copper-
plate engraver, was born in Nuremberg in 1514,
where he died in 1570. His Work, which amounts
tp ahout 1)00 pièces, is distinguished by a gi-eat purity
of exécution and the ornamental appearanec of the
compositions. The most accomplished pièces are
somevvhat in the style of Hans Sebald Beham. He
ranksvery honourably amongst the Little Maslers (see
p. 71). Besides his ovvn compositions, which he lias
engraved, he lias also reproduced Raphaël, Lucas of
Leyden, Aldegraver, etc. We give here some Friezes
executed by him. Thèse little pièces, which are
subjects taken from sport, are very scarce and little
known; they belong to the collection of Mr. A. D***.
