PAR HONORÉ FRAGONARD.
Si le peintre du Verrou ne s'était laissé entraîner par ce senti-
mentalisme passionné qui caractérise les premiers débuts de la
peinture de genre, il eût trouvé en lui l'étoffe d'un décorateur
charmant. Outre ses Cahiers d'eaux-fortes d'après les maîtres
italiens, on a de lui des esquisses de plafonds (groupes et rondes
d'enfants), grandes aqua-tintes tirées en bistre, où se révèle toute
sa facilité. Il a laissé également quatre pièces bachiques, sujets à
bas-reliefs entourés de verdure, et que nous rangeons parmi les
chefs-d'œuvre du genre. Imprégnées d'une grâce toute française,
ces libres interprétations de l'art antique semblent indiquer à
notre Art décoratif contemporain une voie qu'il cherche si pénible-
ment depuis le commencement du siècle. — Composition et gra-

The beginnings of the genre painting are characterized by an
exaggerated sentimentality from which the talented painter of
the Verrou lias not entirely oscaped. We have from him, be-
sides his aqua fortis engravings after theltalian masters, ceiling
sketches (groups of children), large aquatintas drawn in bistre.
In thèse compositions, the extrême facility of the artist is put
to light. He lias also left four bacchic pièces, basso-relievo
subjects surrounded by foliage, which are ranked among the
mas*er-pieces of that style. Thèse free interprétations of the
antique art seem to point out the path, so painfully scarched
after, since the beginning of tins century, by the Décorative Art.
