grands candélabres,

L'époque lastueuse de Louis XIV a donné un grand déve-
loppement à l'emploi des Torchères, ou grands Candélabres.
Accessoires obligés de la décoration des cheminées, panneaux
de glaces, etc., ces grands Bronzes, placés symétriquement de
chaque côté de ces points centraux des Appartements d'ap-
parat (voyez page 102), et reposant directement sur le sol à
la manière des Lampadaires antiques, mêlaient l'éclat de leurs
dorures à la richesse des ajustements des courtisans. Les trois
spécimens ci-dessus, tirés de l'CEuvre de J. Bérain, emprun-
tent leur ornementation aux glorieux faits d'arme de l'époque
(trophées d'armes, prisonniers enchaînés, palmes de la victoire,
etc.). Le sujet du milieu, au chiffre et, aux armes du « grand
roi, » par l'emploi des sirènes, coquilles et dauphins, paraît
célébrer quelque victoire navale. — (Fac-similé)-

The ostentations epoch ot Louis the XIV, lias given a great
development to the use of the Torchères or large Chandeliers.
Thèse large Bronzes, indispensable accessories for chimney,
pannel and looking-glass adoruing, symmetrically placed on
each side of those central points of the state-apartments (see
p. 102) and immediately standing on the soil like the antique
lamps, blended the brightness of their gilding with the rich
dresses of the courtiers. The three spécimens here above,
taken from /. Derairis work, have drawn their embellishments
(trophies of arms, chained prisoners, wreaths of glory, etc.)
from the glorious (eats ofprowess of the time. The subject in
the middle with the « great king's » initiais and coat of arms,
seems to be celebrating a naval victory, as prove the mer-
maids, shells and dolphins. — (Fac-similé).
