XVIIe SIECLE. — école française. CORNICHES

La décoration des grands appartements auxvn" siècle compor-
tant généralement une'ordonnance de colonnes ou de pilas très,les
couronnements ou Corniches demandaient une grande solidité
de lignes, nécessitée par la fermeté d'aspect des points d'appui.
En même temps que la hauteur de ces appartements imposait
aux'couronnement s de grands reliefs et de fortes sailIies(consoles
pour le jeu de la lumière, cette disposition avait pour effet de
mettre la décoration des parois en harmonie avec la richesse de
lignes (moulures, panneaux, caissons, etc.) qui faisait le carac-
tère de la décoration des plafonds de cette époque (voy. p. 43.)-

docorated vith columns and pillars. At that period great atten-
tion was paid to the crownings or Comices; the élévation of thèse
aportments requested fromtlie crownings great reliefsand strong
protubérances (consols) forthe distribution oflight. Tins disposi-
tion had for effect to putthe décoration of walls in harmony with
the richness of lines (mouldings, pannels, coffers, etc.) which
characterized the ceiling décoration of that epoch (see p. 43).
