Nicolas Reusncr, a Gcrman poct and
liistorian of tlie xvi"1 century, coun-
cellor at the court of Saxony, lias left
several illustrated works the most
remarkable of which arc his Emblems
(illustrated by Tob. Stimmer, and of
which we shall speak again) and his
Eulogiums of the princes of the honse
of Saxony, which were published at
Jena, in 1597, with the titlo : Icônes,
sive imagines impp. ,regum,principum,
electorum et ducum Saxoniœ, in-fol.
Notwithstanding theirrough exécution
(which we were obliged to modify),
the portraits of the electors, drawn
partly by T. Stimmer (see p. 155),
offer us precious information about the
Gcrman costumes of the xvi11' century.

Fig. 383 is the portrait of the Ger-
man Balafré, vanquished at Mûhlberg,
John Frédéric tbeMagnanimous. This
cliampion of the déformation was de-
prived of his dukedom and électoral
dignity, in 1547, by Charles V., who
transferred it to the younger or Al-
bertine line. Maurice of Saxony was
the first titular of the same.

Fig.384 isthe portraitof Christian ï.,
who ascended the throne in 1580.

Nicolas Ileusner, poëte et historien
allemand du xvie siècle, conseiller à
la cour de Saxe, a laissé plusieurs
ouvrages illustrés dont les plus remar-
quables sont ses Emblèmes (illustrés
par Tob. Stimmer, et sur lesquels
nous reviendrons) et ses Éloges des
princes de la maison de Saxe, qui pa-
rurent à Iéna, en 1597, sous le titre :
Icônes, sive imagines impp., regum,
principum, electorum et ducum Saxo-
niœ, in-fol. Malgré leur exécution
grossière (et que nous avons dù modi-
fier), les Portraits des Électeurs,
dessinés en partie par T. Stimmpr
(v. p. 155), nous offrent des rensei-
gnements précieux sur le costume
allemand au xvie siècle.

La fig. 383 est le portrait du vaincu
de Mûhlberg, du Balafré allemand,
Jean Frédéric le Magnanime. Ce cliam-
pion de la Réforme fut dépossédé e.i
1547 de son duché et de la dignité
électorale par Charles-Quint, qui les
transféra à la ligne cadette ou Alber-
tine. Maurice de Saxe en fut le pre-
mier titulaire.

La fig. 384 est le portrait de Chris-
tian 1er, qui monta au trône en 1580.
