We add to the spccimcn
given p. 181 other rare pièces
duo to Augustin Venitian'a
graver, and which are likewise
productions of antique frag-
ments.—Plate 403, in the sliape
of afrieze or continuons fvliage,
is, with respect to copper-cut-
ting, a master-piece. Nothing
can bo compared to the frank-
ness, holdness, to the fullness
and simplicity with which ail
the parts of this simple orna-
ment are executed. We call
the attention of our compétent
readers on that pièce.
Plate 404 is the reproduction
of an other fragment. We do
not find in that subject the elc-
gance of exécution of the pre-
ceding plate. This fragment,
as the inscription indicates it,
represents one of the antique
pièces incrusted on the walls
of the Saint Sylvcstcr Church

également des reproductions de
fragments antiques.— La plan-
che 403, en forme de frise ou
de rinceau continu, est, comme
exécution de gravure, un chef-
d'œuvre de la science des tailles.
Rien n'est comparable à la
franchise et à la fermeté, a
l'ampleur et à la simplicité
avec lesquelles tous les modelés
de ce simple ornement sont
rendus. Nous appelons sur cette
pièce l'attention des lecteurs
compétents.
La planche 40t est la repro-
duction d'un autre fragment.
Nous ne retrouvons pas, dans ce
morceau, la souplesse d'exécu-
tion de la planche précédente,
(le fragment, ainsi que l'in-
dique l'inscription , représente
un des débris antiques incrus-
tés dans les murs de l'église
do Saint-Sylvestre à Rome. —
