XVIe SIECLE. — ÉCOLE FRANÇAISE (HENRI III). MEUBLES.
PIEDS DE TABLE,
PAR A. DU CERCEAU.
Quoique le Livre de Meubles d'A. du Cerceau (p. 213) date
de son second exil à Turin et peut-être de l'année même de sa
mort (1592), nous y retrouvons toujours l'imagination vive et
le génie élégant dont le Maitre a fait preuve dans toutes ses
œuvres. Soit que cette suite ait été tirée à petit nombre, soit
que l'Art industriel du temps en ait détruit par l'usage beau-
coup d'exemplaires, elle est devenue excessivement rare, et,
par cela même, fort recherchée des amateurs ; les pièces dé-
tachées qui se produisent de loin en loin dans les ventes pu-
bliques atteignent des prix fabuleux*. — Les quatre pièces
ci-dessus sont tirées delà série des Tables. Nous avons pensé
donner à nos lecteurs une idée suffisante de la variété de ces
compositions en rapprochant ici des pièces de motif analogue.
Ainsi les pl. 449 et 450 ont pour motif des montants doubles
séparés par une arcature flanquée de consoles ; les pl. 451 et

Though .1. du Cerceau's Book of Furniture (p. 213) wa.s
published at ihe lime of his second exile at Turin and perhaps
the very same year he died (1592), we still lînd in it the lively
fancy and élégant genius of which the master gave so many
proofs in ail his Works. Wheter only a small nuniber of proofs
of that séries were drawn, or the industrial art of the time
have destroyed a great number by using them, it became very
scarce, and is, lor that reason, very much sought after by
amateurs; the separate pièces which are occasionally met with
in auction-rooms fetch fabulous priées*. — The four pièces
above are taken Irom the séries of the Tables. AVe hope our
readers will form a correct idea of the variety of thèse com-
positions by the comparison of several pièces of a similar
style. Thus the subjects of plates 449 and 450 are double
uprights with arches supporting consols; the plates 451 and
