XVIe SIECLE. — ÉCOLE ALLEMANDE. CHAPITEAUX,
PAR W. DIETTERLIN.
Après avoir terminé ses travaux au palais de Stuttgard,
W. Diellerlin (voy. p. 22, 82, 134, 150) édita consécutivement
deux livres de son Œuvre. Retiré à Strasbourg, où il s'occupa
de peinture décorative avec les frères Stimmer (v. p. 155), il
put, quoique affligé de maladie et d'une grande faiblesse physi-
que, mettre la dernière main à sa seconde édition. Il la ter-
mina en février 1598, une année avant sa mort. Son (Euvre se
ressent des idées noires qui l'assiégeaient constamment, et,
dans sa Dédicace de l'édition de Nuremberg à Daniel Sorriau,
amateur éclairé des arts, il parle à plusieurs reprises de son
« pèlerinage à travers cette vallée de misère. » — Dans sa
Préface au « lecteur bénévole, » ilannonceavoir lui-même gravé
à la pointe, fait mordre à l'eau-forte, imprimé et édité son (Eu-
vre. La planche ci-dessus, donnant six dessins de Chapiteaux
de l'ordre composite, est la 179e de la seconde édition. — (Fac-

W. Diellerlin, after having achieved his works at the palace
of Stuttgard (see p. 22, 82, 134, 150), consecutively published
two books of his work. AVlien he lived in retirement at Stras-
burg, where he occupied himself with décorative painting in
compagny with the brothers Slimmer ( see p. 155 ), he ma-
naged, though very ill and weak, to give a last touch to his
second édition. Ile terminated it in february 1598, one year
before his death. His "Work bears the stamp of the mélancho-
lic ideas which constantly besieged him, and in his Dedicacy
of the Nurnberg édition to Daniel Sorriau, an enlightened
amateur of arts, he repeatedly mentions his " pilgrimage across
this valley of miseries. „ — In his Préface to the " benevolent
reader, ,, he says that he lias himself sketched his plates with
the graving tool, engraved his works with aqua fortis, printed
and edited them. — The above plate, showing six drawings of
Capitalts of the composite order, is the 179th of the second
