ANTIQUES. — ORFÈVRERIE ÉTRUSQUE.
440. Bulle en or d'une forme très-élégante, à panse canne-
lée (estampé) et ornée à son col et à sa partie inférieure d'or-
nements exécutés en granules d'or. Le dessin du dessous rap-
pelle la figure symbolique des trois jambes disposées en roue,
dont l'origine est étrusque (voir les T'oses), et qui s'est conservée
jusqu'à nos iours dans les blasons de quelques maisons d'Alle-
magne et dsItalie. Ce bijou porte une bélière et a dù servir à
renfermer quelque amulette. — Les Romains avaient emprunté
aux Etrusques, leurs voisins, la bulle d'or comme marque dis-
tinctive des jeunes patriciens. Ils la quittaient à l'âge de pu-
berté, époque à laquelle ils quittaient fa prétexte pour prendre
la torje. Les enfants appartenant aux classes inférieures, et ceux
des affranchis portaient une bulle de cuir. — Ecrin XIX, n° 215.

més de trois parties, réunies et rendues mobiles par des anneaux:
1° le crochet de suspension ; 2° une plaquette découpée suivant
la forme du bouclier échancré des Amazones {pelta), ornée au
centre d'une tête en mascaron ; 3° une pyramide triangulaire

flement, portant à sa partie inférieure un groupe de quatre len-
tilles dont trois à face extérieure rencreusée et renflée d'un
bouton central (estampé). Des granules d'or rangés en cercle
forment astragale autour du bord ouvert de l'anneau dont les
attaches manquent. D'autres groupes de quatre granules, dispo-
sés en piles de boulets, garnissent les points de tangence des

PENDANTS D'OREILLES.

440. A golden Bead ot a very élégant form with fluted(stamped)
paunch, and the neck and lower part adorned with ornaments
executed in granules of gold. The design of the lower part re-
calls to mind the symbohcal figure of the tliree legs disposed
like a whecl, the origin of which is Etruscan (see the Vases) and
which is preserved until now in the blazons of some German
andItalian families. This jewel contains a ring and musthave
served for holding some arnulet. The Romans had borrowed
the golden Bead from the Etruscans, their neighbours, as a
mark of distinction for the young patricians. They parted
with it at the âge of puberty, the time when they laid aside the
prœtexla for the loga. The children of the inferior and free
classes wore a bead of leather. — Casket XIX, n° 215.

parts, united and rendered moveable by rings : 1° the suspen-
sion hook ; 2° a small plate eut after the form of the hollow
shield used by the Amazons {pelta)., the centre decorated with a
masked head ; 3° a triangular pyramid reversed and terminated
by a grain of gold. — Casket IX, n° 126.

snstaining at its lower part a group of four lentils, three of
which are hollowed out on the front-side and filled with a cen-
tral button (stamped). Granules of gold, arranged in a circle,
forming an astragal around the edge of the ring whosefaste-
nings and hooks are missing. Other groups of four granules,
arranged in bullet piles, decorate the tangent points of the

501. Toutes les figures réunies sous ce numéro, et
séparées des suivantes par un filet horizontal, se rap-
portent à l'ensemble du Pendant d'oreilles marqué A et
qui, seul, est dessiné en grandeur d'exécution. La com-
position de ce bijou, qui est des plus riches, son exé-
cution, qui est des plus minutieuses, en font une des
merveilles de la collection.-
Un croissant à renflement, bordé sur son pourtour
d'une suite de bourrelets formant astragale, est terminé
à ses deux extrémités de palmettes estampées, bordées
d'un fil de cordelé, dont nous donnons le détail grossi
en a. Dans l'échancrure de cette pièce supérieure on voit
paraître le Char du Soleil traîné par quatre chevaux et
conduit par le dieu lui-même qui a la téte radiée; nous
donnons en b le détail grandi de ce groupe, qui est en
or fondu et bruni.
Le croissant est fixé sur le col d'une petite coupole
(Q'j').oç) à profil de doucine ou cymaise renversée. La
surface de cette espèce de baldaquin, qui affecte la
forme d'une clochette ou d'un calice de fleur, est cou-
verte de feuilles alternées en cordelé (voy. fig. c et d) et
de petites fleurs estampées. Sur le bord de la coupole,
au-dessus du rang de perles d'or qui la terminent, se
pose, de chaque côté, le pied d'un génie ailé portant
d'une main un trophée de victoire, de l'autre une fleur
à cinq pétales. Les ailes et les tuniques sont rapportées
en paillons d'or estampé sur les corps qui sont fondus
et ciselés.

501. Ail the figures comprised in this number and se-
parated from the followingby a horizontal fillet refer to
the ensemble of the Ear-drop marked A, and which
alone is drawn in full size. The composition of this
jewel, which ranks among the richest, its exécution,
which is of the most minute, form one of the wonders of
the collection.
A divulging crescent, with its circumference bordered
by a set of cushions forming an astragal, is terminated
atboth ofits extremities by chased palm-leaves, edged
by a twisted thread, the full détails of which are given
in a. In the hollow of this upper pièce appears the
Chariot of the Sun, drawn by four horses and guided by
the God himself, whose head is radiated. W'e give in b
an enlarged description of this group, which is in cast
gold and burnished.
The crescent is fixed to the neck of a little cupola
(66'l.oç) with a profile of doucine or cymareversed. The
surface oi thisk ind canopy, which assumes the form of
a bell or flower-cup, is covered with leaves alternately
twisted and little chased flowers. On the edge of the
cupola, above the row of golden pearls which border it,
rests, on each side, the foot of a winged genius holding
in one hand a trophy of Victory, and in the other a
flower with five petals. The wings and tunics resem-
bling spangles of gold are stamped on the bodies which
are cast and chased.
