ABSTRACT. Leonhard Helten, Around 1300. New Forms of Representation
in Church Architecture, „Artium Quaestiones” XXV, Poznań 2014, Adam

Analysis of three German cathedrals from the last third of the 13th century
leads the author of the present paper to the new conclusion on the origins of
a hall type of churches. Cathedrals in Paderborn, Minden and Meissen were
begun as basilicas but they were completed as hall churches. The change did
not however grow out of the particular space concept (Raumvorstellung) but
of using the form of large tracery windows, which required higher walls of
the aisles.

The author is interested in correlations between Gothic architecture and
medieval philosophy. In the present article, he analyzes Commentary on
Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics by Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln in
1235-1253, which expressed the medieval scholar’s interest in the problems
of the psychology of seeing. In his analysis of the western facade and vault
of the nave of the Peterborough cathedral, Merski refers the bishop’s obser-
vations from the Commentary to contemporary progressive architecture.
