wards known as Pratimoksha, were not formulat-
ed till Devadatta began to sow the seed of
discord in the hearts of the disciples, about a
dozen years before Buddha’s death.
Shortly after his conversion. King Prasandjita
sent a message to Suddhodhana, Buddha’s
father,- which read thus : ' “ Rejoice, O Raja,
for thy son has found the drink of the cessation
of death (Amrita) and he is quenching the thirst
of Mankind with his Nectar.’
Suddhodhana, on receiving this message,
sent several men to bis son at Rajagriha, begging
him to visit his father at Kapilavastu, but they
all became bhikshus and returned no more to
the king.
Suddhodhana enjoyed great hopes to see his
enlightened son in a few days ; but weeks after
weeks ‘rolled on’ and the messengers did not
return.
His hopes now began to change into despair, and
eventually he despatched Kaludayi with a letter
to Buddha. The messenger promised that he
