1 Albertus Magnus. Compendium theologicae veritatis, cum thematibus Bernoldi C a e sa-
ri e n s i s. With Tabula of Th. D o r n i b e r g. Ulm, Johann Zainer, n. d. (ab. 1478). Fol.
Goth. 192 unn. 11., the first and last blank. Original wooden boards covered with blind-too-
led white calf, two clasps (wormed and slightly rubbed). 180.—
GKW. 600. H.* 437. Pr. 2532. BMC. II, p. 527. Wegener, Die Zainer in Ulm, 5.
An interesting book printed by the first printer at Ulm. About the author the middle ages have
much disputed and probably no medieval work has been attributed to so many different authors. Judging
from latest explorations the opinion is that the author is Albertus Magnus.
Fine and very large copy, the last leaves of the register slightly waterstained, some
wormholes at end.
PRINTED ON VELLUM
2 Anthologia graeca Planudea. (Edited by Janus Lascaris). Greek letter.
Florence, Lorenzo di Francesco de Alopa, 1494. 4to. 272 leaves. Beautiful Italian
(Florentine?) binding from the beginning of the 16 th century: olive morocco,
sides gilt, double fillet border, fleurons and rosettes, in centre elegant medal-
lion, with double circle, of Cupid bearing a sail (?); gilt and gauffered
edges. 5800.—
GKW. 2048. H.-C. 1145. Pr. 6406. BMC. VI. 666. Pell. 802. Editio Princeps.
plaires ..."
Splendid copy printed on Vellum, being identical with most copies, lacking the last quire of
8 leaves. „The last quire is not found in all copies, probably because the flight and pro-
scription of Piero de Medici shortly after the publication of the book caused the dedi-
cation to be suppressed" (BMC.) — J. P. Morgan Cat. 416: „The letter of Lascaris is often
wanting". — Scholderer, Greek Printing Types, p. 5: „An experiment in a quite diffe-
rent style was made by Lascaris, who in 1494 printed the editio princeps of the An-
thology with a type of his own designing, which consists entirely of majuscules carrying
breathings and accents above them, and supplemented by a larger majuscule alphabet for ini-
tial capitals. The type is no doubt constructed on the same plan as that of the Vicenza Chry-
soloras”. — Bibl. Spenceriana III, p. 3: „The first , and the most beautiful, of all the publi-
cations, printed in capital letters, which came from the press of L. de Alopa. This interesting
collection of fugitive pieces of ancient Greek poetry was compiled by Maximus Planu-
de s, a monk and professor of rhetoric at Constantinople, in the 14 th century”.
Vellum copies are rarely found in the market, and in most of them the last quire is
lacking, as in the present copy.
The most remarkable binding is insignificantly scratched in places.
A splendid and exceptionally large copy, measuring 24 : 15,4 cm.
See Reproduction, Plate 2.
