27 Ars Memorandi. - Petrus de Rosenheim. Memorabiles Evangelistarum figu-
rae. Pforzheim, Th. Anshelm, 1502. 4to. 18 leaves (last blank). With 15
remarkable full-page cuts. Vellum. 300.—
Pr. 11744. First Edition of greatest rarity. This edition is readely distinguished from
the second — published in the same year — by the omission of the "i" from "in" following
’•’Brant” on first page, (it has, however, been stamped or written in, in this copy), further the
preliminary verses in lieu of title occupy 13 lines (23 lines in the sec. ed.) The cuts are here
in early state before the outer border lines were removed in 1504. Other editions followed
till 1522, partly with new title and all these editions are founded on the early Blockbook ”Ars
memorandi" with the cuts adapted from the originals, reduced in size and improved in many
respects.
The preliminary verses are by Brant and S i m 1 e r, the addition of Latin distichs to
the text by Petrus Rosenheim, Prior of the Benedictine monastery of Melk (Austria),
died ca. 1440. — This real first edition is very difficult to find. Fine large copy, slight
stains.
28 — (Petrus de Rosenheim). Rationarium evangelistarum omnia in se evangelia prosa, versu,
imaginibusque quam mirifice complectens. (Edited by G. S i m 1 e r). (Pforzheim), Thomas Ans-
helm), 1510. 4to. 18 11. With 15 curious full-page woodcuts and printer’s
d e v i c e. Boards. 125.—
Pr. 11772. Panzer VIII. 231, 28. Hagelstange (in Zs. f. Biicherfreunde IX, p. 1 sq.). Muther 743.
This “Rationarium", a mnemotechnic work for teaching, and a new edition of the preceding item,
is intended as an aid in memorising the various chapters of the Gospels. It contains therefore very
curious woodcuts, each with rhymed explanations. According to Hagelstange the cuts are possibly by
Anshelm himself, who was also a woodcutter. — Of the greatest importance regarding the history
of symbolics. SI. spotted, Right margins remarged.
29 Biblia, ad vetustissima exemplaria Nunc recens castigata. Venetiis, Hieron. Polus, 1587. 8 vo.
With numerous woodcuts with a small border on both sides of each,
title within a richly adorned border. Brown calf over wooden boards, origi-
nally gilt-tooled. In the centre of the front cover a man (David?), a sword in hand, in the
background a town: on back cover an ornamental stamp. In the 4 comers an angel seated on
a chair. Back sligthly dam. Two metal catches, one clasp finely embossed. Gilt edges. 120.—
BMC. Bibles, p. 47. A richly illustrated early Bible within a fine Renaissance binding.
Very nice Buxheim copy with three interesting entries by the following owners: S i g i s m.
U n t i u s (1592), Sigis m. Ho ms t ein (1610) and Domus Buxiae (1638). Some few unter-
linigs and MS. entries, ink-stains on p. 2—5, otherwise in very good preservation.
See Reproduction, Plate 14.
30 (Buchlein). Diss buechlin ist ge/nant de Rainigung seel vnd leibs mit er/wer-
bung gnad vnd ablass der siind des/crist glebigen menschen . . . Erhart
oglin 15010 I (sic). (Augsburg, O'glin, 1510). 16 mo. 64, 52 11. With 11 full-
page woodcuts of an unknown Augsburg artist, all in contemporary colou-
ring. In the original binding of oak boards covered with finely blind-tooled
brown calf, on the front-cover the inscription: "D'Raingvg”, clasps
wanting. 500.—
Panzer 672 c (after Zapf, Augsburgs Buchdruckergesch. II. 49, 16 — the copy of St.
Gallen). Weller 535 with variations regarding the title and the number of woodcuts (coun-
ting 3 instead of 11), also after the St. Gallen copy and mentioning a further copy at Frei-
burg im Breisgau.
A most interesting early Augsburg woodcutbook which is in this variant apparently un-
known to the bibliographers. The woodcuts of it have never been described nor considered
in the history of art. In the best state of preservation: only on two pages, two capitals are
sligthly damaged.
See Reproduction, Plate 8.
