ÜBER DAS WESEN DER KERAMIK

• In no branch of art is there a greater lack of Information
about the character of the material concerned than in the
case of Ceramics. The appreciation of most collectors is
conditioned by their knowledge, not of what is good or
bad, but of what is rare and expensive. Most collectors
fail to bear sufficiently in mind that the artistic effect of
the various pieces is totally dependent on the surroundings
which are naturally suited to them, and for which they have
been designed.
• Just as the fine flavour of Burgundy, for instance, is not
developed to the füll until the wine is brought to a certain
temperature, so the real charm of an exquisite piece of
Ceramics is seen only in properly chosen surroundings.
• For instance, in an inferior setting an old Persian tile is
shown off to besteffectwhen itis inlaid into a white-washed
wall; Italian Majolica requires velvet as a background.
▲ In keinem Kunstzweig herrscht mehr Unklarheit über das
Wesen des Werkstoffs als in der Keramik. Die wenigsten
der zahllosen Sammler wissen, was an ihren Stücken gut
und schlecht, wohl aber was teuer und selten ist. Meist
wird vom Sammler zu wenig beachtet, daß die künstle-
rische Wirkung der verschiedenen Keramiken vollständig
abhängig ist von der Umgebung, in die sie gehören und
für die sie ursprünglich auch bestimmt waren.
▲ So wie der Burgunderwein, nurauf eine ganz bestimmte
Temperatur gebracht, seine volle Wirkung gibt, so ent-
faltet eine edle Keramik auch nur ihren höchsten Reiz in
einer richtig gewählten Umgebung.
▲ Beispielsweise isteinealte persische Fliese im Innenraum
am besten „verheiratet", eingemauert in eine weiß ge-
tünchteWandjeineitalienischeMajolika verlangt nachSamt.
Gebrauchsporzellan wirkt natürlich am besten auf weißem
