THE MANIFESTATIONS OF THE DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
IN THE ARTISTIC MERCENARY OF ABBOT BERNARD ROSA
THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE ERECTION
OF THE CHAPEL IN PRZEDWOJÓW
Summary
Abbot Bernard Rosa (1660-1696) from Krzeszów was well-known in Silesia
as a propagator of the devotion to St. Joseph. His activity resulted in many works
and was also reflected in sacral architecture. Owing to Rosa’s initiative three chur-
ches were built and dedicated to St. Joseph: in Chelmsk (1670-1691), Stare Bogaczo-
wice (1685-1689), and Krzeszów (1690-1696). This list of churches should include
yet one more chapel in Przedwojów, built in the years of 1693-1694/96. In view of
the sources that have been preserved up to date we may put forward a thesis that it
was supposed to be another church dedicated to the Bridegroom of Our Lady. The
local Protestant population, however, was against it. The Protestants resisted the
Abbot’s policy of re-catholicization, like Valentin Weinert, a parish priest of the
neighbouring parish in Kamienna Góra. Rosa was forced to abandon the building.
The presbytery that had already been built was then adapted to a chapel. The paper
focuses on the socio-religious situation which enabled the Abbot to erect a fourth
church dedicated to St. Joseph.
