pieces of ceramic similar to those found at
the settlement. In the following years 1957-
58, 1963 and 1981 excavations were carried
out on the terrace which contained the
neolithic field, as well as further north where
material washed out from the field, contain-
ing charcoal, charred grain etc. could be
traced into the deposits of the bog. Fig. 8 is a
schematic section through the field with the
terrace to the right and the outwash in the
centre. To the left is the escarpment towards
the former lake. The interruption to the
right marks the position of a road.
Finally fig. 9 presents a section through
the shore of the lake. In the centre is the

The outwash from the field is observed as a
light-grey clayish strip with pebbles below;
the pebbles were often fragmentated by fire.
Moreover we found charred grains of wheat,
charcoal, seeds and fruits of annual weeds
(Fredskild 1978) and pupae (fig. 11 and 12)
of the house fly Musca domestica). More
than 40 were found which were identified by
Boy Overgaard Nielsen (University of
Arhus).4 They cannot derive from cowpats
of grazing cows in the harvested field be-

this preparation above the rhizome of reed, which
lies across it. They were found in the deposits of
the bog together with outwash from the field.
