NOTES ON ACTIVITIES OF
THE INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT
Since 1968 Tools and Tillage has been
published once a year with the same editors.
During that period we changed from pub-
lishing with G.E.C.Gad to the National
Museum of Denmark’s publishing depart-
ment. Our printer through many years, Poul
Kristensen, Herning, has from January 1987
taken over also the publishing respon-
sibilities. This does not, however, affect the
editorial principles of Tools and Tillage,
in fact we expect that we should be able to
serve our readers even better in the future.
You are always welcome to contact the Sec-
retariat and the editors directly with in-
quiries concerning subscriptions back issues
as well as proposal for articles, notes and
reviews. All issues are still available. At the
time of this change of publisher we take the
opportunity to remind our readers of some
of the basic facts of the International Sec-
retariat:
The First International Congress on Re-
search on Ploughing Implements took place
in Copenhagen in 1954. At the congress it
was decided to establish a Permanent Sec-
retariat with the purpose of first and fore-
most acting as a connecting link between sci-
entists in different countries working with
research on the history of agricultural imple-
ments. The International Secretariat
for Research on the History of Ag-
ricultural Implements was established,
and has operated since then with the financial
support of the Danish government.
A Permanent International Committee of
scientists acts as consultant. The President is
Dr. Alexander Fenton, and the Secretary is
Dr. Grith Lerche. The Members are: Dr.
Ivan Balassa, Budapest, Dr. Arnold Liih-
ning, Schleswig, BRD, Dr. Svend Nielsen,
Gammel Estrup, Denmark, Dr. Ernesto Vei-
ga de Oliveira, Lisbon, Dr. F. G. Payne,
Wales, and Dr. Frangois Sigaut, Paris. Prof.
Dr. Axel Steensberg is a Consultant Mem-
ber.
The Secretariat was run from 1954-59 by
Peter Michelsen, from 1959-66 by George
Nellemann and since then by Grith Lerche
assisted by Birgit Wolstrup as clerical officer.
In August 1966 The Second International
Working Conference for Research on
Ploughing Implements took place at Julita
Manor, Sweden. Here the idea of founding
the periodical Tools and Tillage was ad-
vanced.
In May 1979 the Third International Con-
ference on The Interrelationship between
Field Structures, Tilling Tools and Etymolo-
gy took place in the Royal Academy in
Copenhagen.
The Secretariat maintains regular contact
with c. 550 scientists and scientific institu-
tions all over the world. They are registered
in our files and receive our occasional News-
letter, of which No. 29 is issued in 1987, as
well as other material. The Secretariat regu-
larly helps to provide contacts with col-
leagues. To facilitate this clearing-house func-
tion, the Secretariat maintains records on the
occupations, interests and work done by
those registered in its files.
A special Library containing literature on
the history of agricultural implements, field
structures and agricultural processes of all
kinds is established in the Secretariat. It has
mainly been built up by the voluntary co-
operation of institutions and researchers in
different countries, and grows through gifts.
