HfG im Zerrspiegel
HfG in Distorting Mirror
Diesmal gibt es viel über Ulm. Eine ganze
Nummer ließe sich mit dem füllen, was
seit Dezember 1962 in einem Teil
der deutschen Presse über die HfG berichtet
worden ist. Wir verzichten vorläufig auf
eine Wiedergabe dieser Veröffentlichungen.
Sie wären Inhalt einer ausführlichen Dar-
stellung und Gegendarstellung von seifen
der HfG. Dennoch ist es zumindest unsere
Pflicht, unser Leser, vor allem im Ausland, kurz
darüber zu informieren daß die HfG in der
jüngsten Zeit heftig und ausdauernd in der
deutschen Öffentlichkeit angegriffen worden ist.
Parallelen zum Schicksal des Bauhauses
drängen sich auf (s. S. 5 ff.).
Am Anfang stand eine lokale Pressekampagne,
in der Zeitung von Neu-Ulm, der
Nachbarstadt Ulms am jenseitigen Ufer der
Donau. Der nächste Schritt: eine Sendung
über die HfG im Süddeutschen Rundfunk.
Ihr Verfasser: ein Journalist aus Ulm, auf
der Suche nach einer Story, sei sie wahr
oder nicht. Der Grundtenor: die HfG ver-
schleudert das Geld des Steuerzahlers.
(Die HfG ist eine private Institution; doch
erhält sie eine bescheidene, wenngleich
für ihr Budget wichtige Subvention aus
öffentlichen Mitteln, und zwar vom Bund,
vom Land Baden-Württemberg und von der
Stadt Ulm.)
Und dann kam 'Der Spiegel’ —
mit dem informatorischen (oder diffamatori-
schen) Beistand aller derjenigen, die aus
irgendwelchen Gründen ein Ressentiment
gegen die HfG kultivierten. Das am meisten
gefürchtete Nachrichtenmagazin Deutschlands
— im Aussehen 'Time', im Inhalt ’Confidential’
ähnlich, und das Ganze mit dem Grimm
deutscher Gründlichkeit betrieben —
veröffentlichte einen umfangreichen Artikel
über die HfG, einen Artikel, gespickt mit
Unwahrheiten, tendenziösen Darstellungen und
perfiden Anspielungen. Es hat den Anschein,
daß dem 'Spiegel’ sein verdienter oder
unverdienter Ruf, die höchste oppositionelle
Instanz der Bundesrepublik, gleichsam das
politische Gewissen der Nation zu sein,
nicht mehr genügt. 'Der Spiegel’ hat
jüngst weiterreichende Ambitionen. Er will
auch gleichzeitig die höchste kulturelle Instanz
der Bundesrepublik, gleichsam das kulturelle

HfG appearing in a section of the German
press since December 1962. For the moment
we shall dispense with the reproduction
of any these reports which could well
constitute a detailed presentation of the
whole case from our point of view. It is our
duty, however, briefly to inform our readers
especially those in other countries that
the HfG has recently been the object of a
severe and continuous attack in the German
press. Parallels to the fate of the Bauhaus
are obvious (vid. pp. 5).
It all started with a press campaign in the
local newspaper of Neu-Ulm, Ulm’s
neighbour-city on the opposite bank of the
Danube. The next step: a broadcast on the
HfG from the South German Radio Station.
Its author: a journalist from Ulm in search
of a scoop regardless of its authenticity.
The main trend of this report: The HfG is
frittering away the tax-payer’s money.
(The HfG is a private institution which however
receives modest, but for its budget important
support from public sources, from the
national and provincial government as well
as from the City of Ulm.
Now came 'Der Spiegel’ (’The Mirror’) with the
informative (or defamatory) support of all
those who for some reason or other cherished
ressentment against the HfG. Germany’s
most feared news magazine ressembling
’Time’ in its make-up and similarto
’Confidential’ in its content and the whole
thing carried out with grim German
thoroughness published a comprehensive article
on the HfG, an article chock-full of untruths,
tendencious assertions and perfidious
insinuations. It appears that 'Der Spiegel’
is no longer satisfied merely with its reputation
— earned or unearned — of being the highest
authority of the Opposition in the Federal
Republic — of being, as it were, the political
conscience of the nation. 'Der Spiegel’
has lately had higher ambitions. It now
wants to be also the highest cultural
authority — the nations cultural conscience.
Recently it has become clear that this news
