Foreword

man and the two paths he can choose: the path of good and evil. The researcher
analyses the importance of this idea for iconographic motifs in the paintings of
the Viceroyalty of New Spain.
The second part of the volume opens with an article by Jerzy Antoni
Mrożek (Mexico) on the initiation ritual among the Huichol Indians. It is a rite
stretched in time and involves making five cycles of pilgrimage to a sacred de-
sert. What seems very interesting, in this case, is the extraordinary durability
of the native tradition. In the next paper, Magdalena Krysińska-Kałużna (Po-
land) describes the problems that arise from the ontological difference between
the established law and indigenous customary law in Latin America. The author
analyzes the problem in the context of the activities of shamans and healers and
the ritual punishments meted out by them, which are incomprehensible to the
rationalistic Western world. The text by Stanislaw Kosmynka (Poland) is devo-
ted to the significance of initiation rituals and the role of tattoos in the customs
of youth criminal organizations known as “maras” and “pandillas” operating in
Central American countries. The author of the last text in the volume is Adria-
na Sara Jastrzębska (Poland). The author explains how Laura Restrepo’s novel
El Leopardo al sol portrays violence using a syncretic approach that combines
elements of modem civilization with archaic elements rooted in the mythical
and magical thinking.
