ArCHITECTURAL RESEARCH OF ROOF STRUCTURES OF GOTHIC CHURCHES
IN THE NORTH-EASTERN REGION OF MAZOVIA (ŁOMŻA, NIEDŹWIADNA, SZCZEPANKOWO)
The aim of the study is to present the results of architectural research on
the roof structures of Gothic churches in Łomża, Niedźwiadna and Szczepankowo.
The research was aimed at delaminating the existing roof structures and
determining the time of their construction. On the basis of architectural studies
and dendrochronological dating of wood, it was established that in the cathedral
church of St. Michael the Archangel in Łomża, the historie roof structure over the
nave, built in 1692, and the roof truss of the belfry tower was built in 1640. The
roof structures over the aisles can be dated back to the nineteenth century, and
the truss of the choir was mentioned in the twentieth century. The structure of
the roof over the nave and choir is also preserved in the church of St. Stanislaus
in Niedźwiadna. It was built around 1707 after a church fire caused by a lightning
strike in 1692. As a result of modern renovations, it was partially transformed,
which, however, did not disturb the legibility of the original structure. On the other
hand, the church of St. Stanislaus in Szczepankowo has a historical roof structure
over the nave and choir, most probably built in 1740, and a smali roof structure of
the front beli tower built in 1743. The roof truss of the church in Szczepankowo was
previously considered a structure from the 16th century, only dating was carried
out dendrochronology allowed for the correct determination of the actual time of
its construction.
