Tlie appearance of the ship !—represented by its forepart__as an

element in the formation of personal names, seen in the groups Ff|Ky» *f and

Greek nomenclature. In the parallels that — ,. •__

lable relating to the ship occupies the initial Groups (i L. M. Ill)

place. In this connexion the appearance of

the ' rudder' sign, as an element in a name-group has also a considerable

interest (Fig. 695, a). In a secondary shape rfi, on a vase fragment of L. M.

Ill a date from Knossos,2 it is again found, apparently in a name-group

(Fig. 095,(5). Such nautical combinations mark the personal names of a

maritime race.

derance of particular terminal
signs.

Thus among ioo groups
before the ' man' sign, J.

fS 4, while a variety of other
terminal signs are found
once or twice.

Among 55 groups fol-

R recurs 16 times, represent-
ing nearly a third of the
whole, fs is found 5 times, [] and ? 4, ^, L., and f 3, and 15 other signs
once or twice.
