45 COSTA, STEPHANUS. Tractatus de ludo. Pavia, Martinus de
Laualle, 1489.
Fol. Gothic types, 2 col., 63—64 lines, 12 unn. leaves (the
first blank), with sign. Vellum. Frs. 1200.—
Hain*-Cop. 578,5- Proctor 7°95-
Extremely rare, very interesting specimen of a scarce
press of Pavia. Martinos de Lavalle from Monteferrato worked in 1481 at
Saluzzo, from where only one product of him is known. During two years,
1488—89, he was at Pavia, where he issued only 4 books in the whole.
This book is of great typographical interest, but also the contents are very
important for the history of law and civilisation, as it deals with permitted
and prohibited playing. The author examines a. o. also the psychical
effects of playing and its morality. At end there are 6 interesting distidis on
the „leges ludi“.
Good ana very large copy. Slightly waterstained in lower margins.
