142 COSTUMES - EARLY FRENCH BOOKS

The 8 folding principal plates represent different groups of the festive
procession, a. o.: the burgomaster of Vienna Johann von Thaw, the captains
Midi. Stortzer, Seb. Eyssler, Seb. Hergershofer &c. and the train of
“Mentenathores”. The 10 cuts in the text represent: a trumpeter, Europe riding
on an ox, a siren riding on horseback, the statue of Victoria, the statue of the
Four Vices, Georg v. Etzndorff riding to the tournament, a harquebus („Hacken-
sditttze”), a „Tupel-S61dner”, „Drommel und Pfeiffen” (in Suiss uniform).
From our copy are wanting 7 plates, but from Lipperheide’s the same
number is missing; the title leaf is mounted and si. browned, in 1. K* a few
small holes, the first and the last 11. insignificantly wormholed. The folds of the
plates are partly mounted. In the whole the copy is rather large (all borders
are intact) and of good condition.
See Reproduction, plate XXXIII.

Sm. 8VO. 87 unn. leaves. Title in
red and black. With a nice
title-cut, arithmetical di-
agrams in the text, many
ornamental initials, and
Bonfons’ device at end
(Silvestre 909). Old ms. vellum.
Frs, 500.—
Extremely rare, nice arith-
metical anonymous book. Not in
Brunet and Graesse, and not mentioned
by Smith, Rara Arithmetica.
Thebook is written for practical
use, giving many examples from practical
life, exchange and commerce.
At beginning there are examples of
methods of addition and subtraction,
multiplication and division, with a multi-
plication table (on 1. E8 and F1—F3) etc.
Then follow different methods of multi-
plication and division with applied
problems, fractions, rule of three. On
leaf H3 begins an interesting chapter
dealing with measuring of capa-
city, e. g. wine, oil,&c. Then follow
numerous interesting examples from
commercial life and exchange.
Very good copy, marginal
notes and corrections by the hand
