(one double page) woodcuts, representing views of the antique Rome,
three arms on title (of Rome, Clemens VII etc.) Vellum. Frs. 750.—

First edition.
Extremely rare, interesting woodcut book on the antique Rome. It represents the oldest
Rome after Plinius (with 4 gates), then Rome with 8 gates, and the largest (double page) view shows
Rome with 34 gates. The other cuts represent the Capitol, Via Appia, Via Sacra sive Triumphalis, &c
A very interesting cut is the representation of the antique bath, showing the building, a basin
with a naked man and a child, on the left side are shown a naked man and a naked boy holding
a jug and a bathing-brush, on the right side are two bathing-brushes („strigiles“). The last cut
shows a curious representation of the Circus,with several quadrigae.
The author was an Italian physician who died at Rome inn 1527. He was one of the first
translators of Hippocrates.
Very fine and large copy, with excellent impressions of the cuts, here printed for
the first time.

First EDITION in FRENCH, extremely scarce. The translation is made by Van
Effen and Miseulde Ste.-Hyacinthe, the first frontispiece is signed: B. Picart . . . 1720,
the other copper-plates are probably executed by the same artist.
This edition appeared only one year after the original edition (of 1719) in English.
The large, folding map of the world shows the whole America and the route of Robin-
son Crusoe.
