First Illustrated Edition of this famous work on architecture. Essling
gives a rather exact description of the cuts here used for the first time.
All cuts are very interesting, they represent a. o.: caryated men and women,
a curious figure representing the earliest men, numerous architectural cuts,
diagrams and plans, an aqueduct (I. 81), Sinking the foundation of a house
(1. 83), Two men, one holding a cylinder, the other an apparatus called „meso-
labium” (1. 86), the zodiacal constellations within two large circles, a ^capstan”,
a street-roller, hydraulic mills and weels &c.
The great importance of this celebrated work is best known. It is de-
dicated to Augustus and from the early Renaissance down to a comparatively
recent time the influence of it has been remarkably great. The author lived
in the 1st cent. A. C., as a Roman architect and engineer.
Exceedingly fine copy with large margins of this interesting first
illustrated edition. The impressions of the cuts are very fresh and clear. The
margins of a few leaves are insignificantly stained by use.
Quite complete copies (with the index)are extremely scarce.

Pibce de cabinet triss int€ressant. La decoration de la poignee du
battant et des faces, qui sont dores a elegantes dentelles, est un beau travail
franpais du 18me siecle. Sauf petits dommages d’une bonne conservation.
