107 TUCHER, HANS. Reise in das gelobte Land. (Pilgrimage to
Jerusalem, in German). Augsburg, Job. Schonsperger, 1482.
Fol. Goth, letter, 34 lines, 75 unn. leaves, woodcut capital on
the first leaf. Vellum. Frs. 5.800.—
Hain*-Cop. 15663; not in Proctor; not in Brit. Mus. Cat.
The extremely rare FIRST EDITION of one of the most remar-
kable pilgrimages to the Holy Land in the 15th century. Hans Tucher,
a wealthy Niirnberg patrician undertook this voyage in 1479. The book
is full of reliable details, and gives the best extant account of the Holy Land
in the 15th century. The author’s purpose, to give all possible advice and in-
struction to intending pilgrims, has made him include most valuable infor-
mation on such details as the exact terms agreed on with the Venetian captain
who took them to Palestine, a member of the Contarini family; also the exact
equipment for the journey and other interesting particulars. The text of Tudier’s
voyage has been reprinted in the „Bibliothek d. Literar. Vereins in Stuttgart”.
Our copy is the real first edition of 3 others published
in the same year. It must be very rare because we are not able
to find other copies anywhere; neither in the Brit. Mus. and
Bodleian Libr. nor in American or other Libraries are copies of
this book.
Fine copy.
