Contains 53 cuts in all, being 12 more than in the first edition. These
additional cuts, presumably by the original hand, first appeared in this year
(1547) either in the present edition or in its French counterpart, and comprise
the following subjects, commencing on c6 verso: — The Soldier, Gamblers,
Drunkards, Fool, Robber, Blind man, Carter, Beggar-cripple, and 4 cuts of chil-
dren. These exquisite cuts or rather wood-engravings were executed after the
designs of Holbein by Hans Liitzelburger called Franck whose monogram HL
occurs in the cut of the Duchess on C4 vo. On D6 commences Medicina Animae,
followed by pieces by SS. Cyprian & Chrysostom. Good copy, only 2 or 3 cuts
touched by colour.

The 53 fine woodcuts are close but reversed copies of Holbein’s origi-
nals but are also larger in size. Five of the present cuts (The Abbess, Bs; the
Canon, Bs; the Justice, B3 vo; the old man, B7; the blind man Dx) have the
engraver’s monogram AS., i. e. Anton Sylvius or Bosche, a prolific artist,
often confused with an inferior engraver (A) of the same period and also em-
ployed by Plantin. The French king (A6 v.) who in the original editions was
intended for Francois I, now probably represents Henri II.
Only 2 cuts very slightly dam. otherwise very fine copy with splendid
impressions of the cuts.
Copies in such a fine condition and in the original bindings are
of the greatest rarity.

First, scarce edition of two liturgies for the use of the Greek Church, ascribed to St.
John Chrysostome and St. Basilius, the liturgy of the missa praesanctificatorum, and the writing of St.
Germanus „Historia ecclesiastica et mystica theoria”, very nicely printed in red and black.
S. Basilius, archbishop of Caesarea (b. about 330, d. 379) was the patriarch ef the Greek
monachism in Asia Minor and reformer of the Greek liturgy. - S. John Chrysostome (b. 344 or 347,
d. 407), the renowned church-father has also written a Greek liturgy, but the authorship of St. John is
now called in question. — S. Germanus, patriarch of Constantinople was bom ab. 640 and died in 733-
